The itinerary
While spending time in Nyksund you may like to plan a hike and enjoy the local nature. Unfortunately we can't promise good weather at any time but during winter the chances of spotting northern lights or wild animals will be very good or simply enjoy the quiet north. For those who still have enough energy for some evening activities you can look forward to some interesting surprises.
Day one:
Arrive in Nyksund
where we'll do our very best to make you feel comfortable in
your new home. Also if you're lucky, you might have your first glimpse of the
magnificent northern lights.
Day two:
We start the day exploring the historical costal village of Nyksund which
history dates back to stone age times. After the tour we will visit a
neighbouring fishing village to see how today's fishing is done. Those of you
who wish to join in can look forward to getting some hands-on-experience helping
prepare the fishing lines..
Day three:
The first of the two main adventures begins here where we'll go to the
Tysfjord. There an experienced crew will take you on a boat trip in the hope to
get closer to one of natures most beautiful creatures: the wild orca. Along the
way, the crew will happily try to answer any questions you might have.
Day four:
Today we'll take in some culture by visiting three local artists in their
studios. Here we'll be able to view the artwork and speak with the artists to
hear how they have been inspired by the Vesterålen. The day ends in Sortland with a guided tour through the town and an opportunity
for some shopping.
Day five:
Today we will take the post boat to the islands just off the main land. This is
not simply a mail delivery service, it also provides general supplies and has
become an essential link for the islanders.
In the afternoon we'll visit our local blacksmith's workshop which is the
oldest in northern Norway. The workshop has been brought back to life after
thirty years of rest. You'll be able to get a good understanding of how it has
been operated in the past.
Day six:
The second of the two main adventures is to visit a husky farm. How many dogs
does it take to be pulled on a sled? You'll have the opportunity to find out
first hand as we go on a journey with the guides and the dogs.
Any questions you may have about the huskies can be answered by the fire in the
"Lav", the traditional tent of the Sami.
Day seven:
A day to relax.
We'll invite a Norwegian chef who will teach us the authentic
way to cook a winter's meal. Even though it's said "Too many cooks spoil the
broth." I believe together we'll be able to prepare and enjoy a memorable
meal.
Day eight:
Departure day.
Farewell to the ones who are continueing their trip to further
destinations. Those of you who require public transport will be given a ride to
Sortland.
Of course everyone is welcome to stay longer at our hostel for another couple of days after the tour has ended. We also welcome you to arrive a few days in advance. Outside of the booked tour dates we are unable to provide programs for the day but we would be happy to suggest any activities to keep you occupied.
